The Ferryman: A Solo Post-Apocalyptic Adventure

Take on the role of The Ferryman and explore a perilous realm teeming with raiders, ferocious beasts, and harsh weather while seeking supplies, jobs, and companions. After enduring years of hardships in the wasteland, your weary body and fractured mind are now at a critical crossroads: either escape the territory or risk becoming just another hood ornament.

A delightful solitaire adventure that will have you moving around the map, exploring new spaces while trying to manage threats and resources, along with events that might come along. Can you survive long enough to gather the necessary supplies and allies? There are plenty of things that are going to try and stop you along the way, but if you succeed you’ll get to roll on the Exodus table and bring your adventure to a successful conclusion. If you enjoy the theming of a Post-Apocalyptic world, you’ll certainly want to check this one out.

Then to the Maypole

Come ye young men, come along

With your music, dance and song

Bring your lasses in your hands

For ‘tis that which love commands.

Then to the Maypole haste away

For ‘tis now our holiday

Then to the Maypole haste away

For ‘tis now our holiday

A small card game that reminds me a little of The Maiden in the Forest, simply because the cards get arranged in a circle and you’re moving cards around. However, with this one each card has some sort of ability, and you play until all cards have been flipped (either to use the ability, or to keep them in place). Poor planning might make it so you have to misstep on some cards, costing you a point per card, but there might be times when that’s your best plan in order to lock in the requirements of the Song card you’re working toward. Can you finish all 6 Song cards?

Survive Alive

Following a cataclysmic event, survivors are forced to scavenge as their only hope of staying alive. Even worse, the dead (the Zeds), are attacking the living. As one of the few survivors you will build a Base, obtain resources by scavenging the Community Map, protect your group using weapons and building defences, and construct facilities to make life a little more tolerable. If you can survive the Zeds and gain the most influence points at the end of six rounds, you will be the victor of Survive Alive!!

Wave upon wave of the dead are coming, and it is up to you to ready your defenses and utilize your characters effectively. Manage a wealth of resources that will never feel like enough, not only building new things but also to help make sure your characters are able to eat and sleep between rounds. You know the dead are going to come at the end of each round, but you don’t know exactly where nor how strong, making it an interesting approach in trying to balance what scores you the most points versus what you need to be able to survive the threat looming outside. This looks to be a fun, fast game of survival within your own communities.

Fliptown: Lone Gun Solo Campaign

With a hitch in your step and a glint of hope in your eye, you embark on the trail, a seemingly endless stretch of cacti, canyons, and tumbleweeds. Trudging along, you gaze upon the orange skyline as it shimmers in the distance, wondering if you have the strength to move ahead in this harsh desert heat. Tiny buildings barely come into view, mere specks of rust-colored dirt on the horizon. It ain’t much, but you’ve got a hankering to call it home. That is, if the local townsfolk welcome a newcomer into their herd. In any case, it’s a fresh start - a chance to redefine yourself. Whether you’ll keep on the straight and narrow this time or stray back to your old renegade ways, only time will tell.

Don’t scoff at the idea of blending Poker with a flip & write game. The base game is a lot of fun, as each round you’ll get 5 turns and each of those turns will give all players the same three cards, using one for the suit to determine the area of your map to use, one using the value to determine which spot on that area you’re marking, and the other to go toward the 5-card poker hand at the end of the round.  With a 12-chapter campaign to play through for solo players, there’s a ton of content here to experience that is going to help tell a fun narrative. You’ll need the base game of Fliptown for this, but it does NOT recommend using any other add-ins or variants available.

Dangerous Space: Will Tensin, Rescue Mission

Will, the more brash of the Tensin brothers, is happy to dive blind for the sheer surprise and chaos that ensues, Deathwish?

We jump back in again with Will this week, and get to look a little at his pair of skills and how those can help him to overcome adversity. Since he’s running the rescue mission this week, time is of the essence, and nothing will help more than being able to adjust dice. His Risk-Taker skill lets him bump an unused die by 1 when marking a dangerous space, something that is going to happen plenty of times over the course of the game. And he’s a hardy character when you factor in his Hardened skill, which allows him a reroll on defense rolls.

The Cursed Menagerie: Endless Nights

Jason Greeno here with one more release this week:

Strange new spirits are becoming increasingly common. What’s an investigator to do when faced with so many new threats? Perhaps it’s time to rely on the old ways—charms that naturally defend against certain types of ghosts. Hopefully, it will be enough!

A year ago, we released The Cursed Menagerie. Now in 2024 we're excited to introduce the second expansion for The Cursed Menagerie—Endless Nights!. In this expansion players gain access to powerful charms that can turn the tide against formidable new entities. However, investigators must carefully observe the ghost’s characteristics to respond quickly and avoid putting themselves in danger!

Game of the Week: Phantom Ink on sale for just $5!

Renowned Mediums race to figure out a secret object that their teammate - a Spirit - is trying to communicate. Mediums take turns asking their Spirits questions about the secret object.

If you love puzzling out clues with limited information, you’ll enjoy this one. Dividing into teams, players will be either Mediums (trying to guess the word) or Spirits (trying to get your team to guess a word). This is done through passing question cards to the Spirit, of which they keep one to answer and discard the other - and then start writing the answer one letter at a time until the Medium tells them to stop (or they finish the word). Since the other team might not know the question asked, the information written may or may not be valuable to helping them also uncover the correct word. See how in tune with your friends you are while playing a game that is certain to be a lot of fun to get to the table.

Death Valley: Highs & Lows

The infamous Death Valley National Park is as dangerous as it is beautiful. Document your trip through this scorching landscape in a scrapbook of desert features from landmarks to animals, but be mindful of the heat and other hazards!

Death Valley has some pretty awesome landscape art, and a cool mechanic with building both your Journey and your Scrapbook to catalog your adventure. However, there’s an interesting press-your-luck mechanic as you can bust and lose some of your cards. With some really cool abilities on some of the cards, you may end up having far different scores than you’d suspect during the course of gameplay - plus there’s neat info on each card about the location on the card. Those who have the first entry can easily mix this in to create a unique set of 18-cards to use every time you play, but even if this is your first foray into Death Valley, there’s no better place to begin than here.
