Denizens: The Hero War

The Mythrohir slept as an unforeseen threat emerged from the forsaken desert mountains of Nul-Gar in the Third Act of the Age of the Living. Massive armies wearing the mark of Nul-Gador assembled at the shores of the Westerlore. The great kings of the Riverwide Alliance rose up to meet them. So, too, did the Denizens. The sky burned red at the first clash of armies, signaling to all this would be a bloody and hard-fought war. It would not be decided by the might of armies nor the cunning of generals. This would be a war of Heroes.

If you enjoy head-to-head games with only a few cards, but with plenty of room to make creative and clever gameplay decisions, you might be delighted with Denizens. While there are only 18 cards in the deck, there are some pretty hefty decisions to be made as to how to use your cards without running the risk of exhausting your deck too far, because that leads to defeat just as surely as losing too many battles would be. With very different factions utilizing quite different approaches toward gameplay, this is a perfect game to play in pairs, switching sides after each game is resolved.

Behold: Rome

Hold fate in your hands as you gather and spend resources to develop your civ and build your engine. Conquer stronger and stronger regions, or abandon them to level up your nation or gain tributaries. Outscore your rival nation to solidify your place of prominence in history!

A delightful little in-hand game where you are building up your civilization across twelve rounds. If you’ve played hit games like Palm Island or Galdor’s Grip, some of the ideas within the game will feel familiar in how you rotate cards, saving some to spend for other cards later and manipulating the order in which cards are being held. If you ever find yourself wishing you had space to play a game - or just want something to take along on a road trip - this is an excellent solution to that issue and worth looking into.

Adventure Cats

The land is in peril and the animals need your help! Play as a heroic cat that travels across the land to rescue animals in danger. You must bring them back to safety in one of your strong castles. Animals you rescue give you magical gems that help you on your adventures. But be careful! A dangerous dragon is out there trying to steal your gems!

A fun game for most ages, this will have you moving cats around the map, dropping gems along the way to chart your path as you try to rescue animals and avoid getting burned by the dragon. Fill your castles efficiently and you can claim the crown in this little game. If you enjoy planning out clever ways of moving (you have to use all of your gems for movement, so sometimes a straight line isn’t the best path to follow) and collecting specific animals to fulfil your castle needs, then you don’t want to pass over this game.

Dangerous Space: Archivist Four, Retrieve Mission

When the Solar Church takes an interest in a junker, watch out. That usually means this ain’t no average dive. Good thing Sunshine has psionic abilities.

Sunshine here has some really fascinating upgrades to track along. He has some strong ranged abilities to manage, which helps him deal with threats at a distance. I love the options in his gear, helping to either make his defense better or grant rerolls and other utility along the way. His movement pathway is a good one too, trying to decide between more movement value versus more movement options by adding in diagonals. No matter how you decide, he should provide some strong options as you work through and attempt to retrieve those Databits.

Game of the Week: AdvanceQuest on sale for just $2!

Adventure awaits and a sinister evil grows in the Great Myconid Kingdom, a tangled forest of towering mushrooms. Join forces with a brave mushketeer and fight back to back in...Among I, the Fungi.

You want something new and unusual to pass the time in a solo experience? Try out AdvanceQuest, where you create a character and their traits and then proceed through a sequence of storyline beats mixed with rolls for advancement and skill tests to surpass those events or encounters. Even if you’ve played games like Four Against Darkness, this is sure to offer something new and fresh in a small, quick-playing package. All you need are a handful of cards to print out, and at least a full set or two of polyhedral dice. Imagination not required, but certainly helpful in bringing your resolutions to life as you go.

The Last Lighthouse: Terrible Tides Expansion

The deepest recesses of the ocean hide nightmares even more terrible than those you’ve seen. As the tides carry them to shore, you must steel yourself for a desperate fight.

A small 6-card expansion that modifies the nightmare cards, adding some extra spice to your solo experience in The Last Lighthouse. Like so many other excellent expansions to solo games, this also provides a new way to end in loss while fending off the threat: if you need to add a new Tide card but they are all already in the sea, you’ll lose. So while it might be tempting to avoid them as long as possible, you cannot ignore them forever if you want to win.
