Graduate in Necromancy: Warlock’s Apprentice Expansion

A visiting warlock is teaching a few courses this year at the university. It is a big deal since after two semesters, the famous warlock will choose one student as an apprentice. Do you have what it takes to become the warlock’s apprentice?

A quick little game full of engine-building and push-your-luck mechanics, this one has you trying to survive two semesters while accumulating enough money and advancing to graduate. With multiple options on how to utilize each card as it appears, there’s a lot of decision space in a small, fast-playing package. This game has delightful artwork, a fairly unique spin on a theme, and easy rules to help you hit the ground running and get it to the table. This expansion adds in 3 new courses and a tired card, bringing new twists to provide a fresh experience to a game you might already know and love.

Reforest: Plants of the Pacific Northwest Coast

Players compete to grow the healthiest forest ecosystem by arranging a synergistic tableau of plants, each with their own unique traits and abilities.

Work to cultivate the best-scoring set of plants in your coastline ecology in this exciting game. What I like about it is that there’s a pyramid of cards where  you can play cards, and cards can be placed only in certain layers of that mountain. What’s more, you can cover existing cards with a taller card, paying the difference in cost rather than its full cost and, depending on the card covered, it might still grant its full points at the end of the game. Talk about a fun little way to interact with your own tableau of cards! Whether you enjoy nature-themed games, games with card-driven tableaus, or a mix of both, you’ll want to check this one out.

Aqua Tofana

Italy, 17th century. Giulia Tofana is a well-known cosmetologist who secretly elaborates a lethal poison that, disguised in perfume bottles, she sells to abused wives who wish to get rid of their husbands. Will the antidote be strong enough to fight it?

An interesting little game with only 18 cards, you’ll take turns placing cards into an eventual 4x4 grid, flipping cards shown on the shape on the card. Why, you might ask? Because once the grid is filled, the players will compare to see who has the most face-up cards remaining, so you’ll want to plan carefully in order to effectively maximize the impact of your card plays. Yet those flipped cards can be flipped back again with subsequent plays, so it really is a game of both planning and timing in order to find success in this game with an unusual theme.

Dangerous Space; Geida, Rescue Mission

Geida was always the sidekick until her entire team got ‘wiped’ in a faulty training exercise. Now she goes solo on all missions.

Geida is a ranged master, so unsurprisingly she’s up against some tough competition this week. The Plotting Brawlers will make it so she cannot attack at range while there’s an uncollected flag in their room, and any ranged line is filled with Dangerous Spaces, making it a tricky challenge to navigate successfully. However, the clock is always ticking away in this one where Geida needs to rescue all of the survivors - she might need to pull out all the stops in order to reach success this week!

Game of the Week: At the Helm on sale for just $2!

The sea is a dangerous place. Whether it’s storms or sea serpents, you’re putting your life on the line each time you set sail. Boldly face the challenges of the open ocean as you steer your ship into uncharted waters.

There may not be a white whale in these seas, but they still contain dangers aplenty. Take the wheel and challenge the ocean and its trials and tribulations as captain of the ship. This is a small solo game with some hand management, a market of cards to purchase, and challenges to overcome before your health or your time runs out. With several challenges to choose from, there’s plenty of reason to have this hit your table several times in a row. It never ceases to amaze me how much can be packed into such a small package for a game, and this promises to be one of those solo games that are very replayable and fun.

Button Shy Game of the Week: Battlecrest Imperator II, Griyan, and Mub Zane

Somewhere along the line, you made a dangerous enemy. The Exarchy themselves have sworn vengeance upon you. Now their chosen champion stalks you at every step. Prepare yourself for the fight of your life as you face the mighty imperator.

If you enjoy Battlecrest, you’ll like the new challenge that this second Imperator brings to the solo table. With parameters to dictate its actions and movement, the character you face will move around the board and attack. However, keep in mind that you are ALWAYS in range for the Imperator, meaning there’s less benefit to keeping back, but you can still try to edge things in your favor if you bring a minion into battle, as sometimes it targets the closest or furthest target for its attack - and you can manipulate that into your favor. Also check out the new heroes: Griyan and Mub Zane, to expand your options.
